I’m sure you’ve heard about STEM. But if you haven’t, it’s an acronym that stands for “Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.” Because of a desperate need for qualified individuals to fill job vacancies in STEM fields, there has been a HUGE push lately to introduce children to STEM and encourage them to fall in love with the field.
The job market is good. The pay is great. But if you’re intimidated by science and math, or aren’t really sure how those fields apply to the job market, it’s hard to see yourself pursuing that in the future. STEM initiatives are helping children learn that it is challenging, it is rewarding, and it is FUN. The opportunities in STEM are endless and exciting – but how can you encourage your curious child if you yourself aren’t STEM minded?
Thankfully, the internet’s got you covered. Here are ten fun STEM websites that your child can explore for FREE. (Note: some may have a subscription option, but all have some level of free participation.)
NASA Kids’ Club – Drive the Mars Rover, build and launch a rocket, or simply learn about space. This website is perfect for your future astronaut!
Kinetic City – A great collection of science experiments, games, activities, and challenges.
eGFI (Engineering Go For It!) – This website is more about information than games and is GREAT for your older child who wants to explore careers, learn about different STEM fields, and see what a “day in the life” looks like for people in different jobs. It’s pretty text-heavy so it’s best for your stronger reader who’s more interested in learning than playing.
Code.org – Do you have a future programmer on your hands? Under the “code studio” tab, there are coding courses and activities available for kids starting at age four. FOUR!!! All courses are available at no cost. There’s also plenty available for the high-school-aged student, too.
Kids.gov – This government-sponsored website includes games and science videos for kids in grades K-12. Let them loose in this safe environment and give them the chance to explore!
TechRocket – Whether your budding engineer wants to learn coding, game design, or graphic design, there are courses here to help them learn.
Funology – Geared toward younger elementary grades, this colorful site is packed with information and activities. (And mom, it’s also got FREE printables to keep your child’s math and science skills on track this summer.)
Try Science (Kids) – This has some fantastic science experiments you can easily do at home. Finding that your kids are bored this summer? Have them peruse the list of experiments and do one together this afternoon!
Weather Wiz Kids – Is your kiddo fascinated by weather? Then this is your spot! Information, articles, games, flashcards, and more – all weather, all the time!
Math Blaster – Do you have what it takes to save the galaxy? With your math skills, you just might! Check out this fun game – the trial version is free.
You don’t have to be a genius to encourage your child to fall in love with STEM. There are lots of tools out there to help you. But if you really want to set them on the right path, partner with a school that places special emphasis on the STEM fields.
