Thankfully in a moderate climate like ours, we don’t see many days with blazing temperatures. But there are some stretches where the thermometer creeps up and it’s important to be aware of risks if you’re planning to do some DIY maintenance on your roof. Keep these things in mind:
1. The air temperature will be hotter on your roof than it is on the ground. And that’s not just because you’re in direct sun or without shade. Your roof absorbs and reflects the heat, making it hotter – and potentially dangerous. Take frequent breaks, drink lots of water, and avoid working during the hottest times of the day to prevent overheating or heat-related illness.
2. Don’t skip safety gear. We get it. Who wants to wear a helmet or gloves when it’s hot? But these things are designed to protect you – don’t skip safety in favor of comfort, even when it’s warm out.
3. Your tools and roof will be hot to the touch. Be aware that metal tools, your gutters, and your roof surface will be hot to the touch and can cause burns. Be careful!
In Western Washington it’s rarely “too hot” to do roofing work, but it definitely gets hot enough to demand exercising heat-related caution. So be smart, don’t over-do it, and take precautions.
