It hasn’t been my finest week. I caught a cold this weekend and for some reason every little thing my kids say or do this week has just seemed too much to handle. I swear they are moving in slow motion every morning when we need to get out of the house and they know just how to push all my buttons at once!
You know that game ‘Whack-a-Mole’ with the big mallet where you try to hit all the moles and you are just banging and bashing all of the holes at once? Yes, that’s my week. I’m the mole.
In response, my normal grace has evaporated fairly quickly and has been replaced with a short fuse and an “I’m over it” attitude.
And then…God. He has this way of sending little reminders. And, this morning, he hit me over the head with this one…
Rewind back a couple weeks. It was raining pretty hard, really hard. It was the kind of rain where you just walk outside and you are drenched in an instant. I was walking my son to school and he exclaims loudly, “Mommy, I’m so glad it is raining.” Me, with a quizzical look, “Why?” Him: “Because of the rainbows!” And he proceeded to look for the rainbows with joy, anticipation and expectation.
“Because of the rainbows.”
My son, in all his 5-year old wisdom, reminded me of something very simple. We have to have the damp, soggy, cold, stormy weather in order to see the rainbows.
This morning, after the tough start to the day, my exhaustion and my grumpy attitude were winning and, as we were driving to school and work, a rainbow appeared. Suddenly, my son’s words repeated in my head. “I’m so glad it is raining…..because of the rainbows.”
I heard my kids scream from the back seat. “IT’S A RAINBOW!”
So much joy.
It’s these little moments that God reminds us fully of all we have and all we should be grateful for in our lives. Whatever you are going through this week, as you approach Thanksgiving, focus your heart on gratitude, joy and thankfulness. Remember, it is always after the roughest storms that the brightest rainbows appear. Look for them with expectation, anticipation and childlike joy.
Happy Thanksgiving!
