One of the most common reasons for accidents on the road is drowsiness. We are all busy, and in the height of the Christmas season we may be going even faster than usual. Take the time to practice these tips to find rest daily.
The national sleep foundation says that adults 26-64 require 7-9 hours of sleep daily. Are you getting enough? If not, here are some simple things you can do to help!
- Eliminate Stress – Easier said than done, right? Yes, but it is important. Stress can have a very negative impact on the body, causing health issues much deeper than just lack of sleep. Identify areas of your life that are causing you stress and take measures to start to eliminate the stress as much as you can.
- Is your room too bright? Probably not as much this time of year, but switch to heavier curtains if you need to.
- White noise. Invest in a white noise machine, white noise app on your phone or an air purifier in your room. This will provide a soft humming sure to lull you right off to dreamland.
- Walnuts or Bananas are a great way to drift off the sleep. They are both loaded with tryptophan and bananas have melatonin which is the sleep hormone.
- Empty your head. Do you find it hard to put your brain to sleep? Take a moment to write down all the thoughts in your head to get them out so you don’t think of them. Wake up in the middle of the night? Just jot down what’s on your mind so you can get back to sleeping.
- Avoid naps. I know. It’s sad, but you don’t want to end up with insomnia because you were napping too long during the day.
- Routine is important. Try to stick to a set routine every day. Head to bed at the same time and wake up at the same time. This will help your body get into a natural rhythm.
- Are you drinking caffeine too late in the day? Remember, it is not only coffee that contains caffeine, but tea, soda and some foods as well.
- Lavender – Sprinkle a little lavender essential oil on your pillow. It smells so good and will relax your body and mind.
- Don’t be afraid to see your doctor. If you just can’t get sleep to work for you, check with your doctor. You may have some other health conditions going on – things like acide reflux, asthma, depression or arthritis along with other chronic illnesses can have an effect on how you sleep.
Sleep is so important. Do yourself a favor and make it a priority. Your health will thank you!
