It’s easy to do. You are running around getting the house ready for guests, the potatoes peeled, the ham in the oven and the table set. Suddenly you look around the kitchen at all the piles of prodce that you’ve cut, dishes you need to clean and garbage that you need to take out.
Quick! Shove it down the garbage disposal!
Before this thought crosses your mind, STOP! Don’t let your garbage dispoal ruin the holidays for you. It happened to my friend Wendy. She was moving so fast, trying to get that kitchen tidy before the doorbell rang and suddenly the sink was backing up, water was everywhere and it was a holiday for the record books.
Garbage disposals are amazing. I especially know this because I currently don’t have one. So, cherish the one you have, my friends, and treat it nicely. A little dramatic? Maybe. But, trust me when I say you have enough to worry about this holiday season so let’s not add ‘Buy a new garbage disposal’ to the list.
In order to avoid that chaos, stop yourself before putting these things in the disposal.
- Celery
- Potato peels
- Artichoke leaves
- Asparagus
- Onion skins
- Corn husks
- Lettuce
- Banana peels
- Hard fruit pits
- Large pieces of citrus fruits
Did you know that starchy things expand in water? Things like pasta, rice, potatoes all expand. CLOG!
If you want to freshen up your drain and normally use a lemon/lime or other citrus fruit, use a small piece and not the whole thing. Fresh and and not clogged!
Just a few little tips that help us keep things running smoothly this holiday season.
Okay, now, just for fun….ever find anything strange down in your garbage disposal? A pacifier, keys, toys…? We’d love to hear your story!
Have you entered our home for the holidays contest yet? Let SPIRIT make sure you or your loved ones make it home for Christmas. Thanks to South West Plumbing for making this possible!
