Most people spend time agonizing over interior and exterior house paint colors, while roof color is often an afterthought. But since your roof accounts for up to 40% of your home’s visible exterior it deserves a lot more consideration. Here are some things to think about when choosing a roof color for your home.
Exterior house color. If you’re choosing colors for new construction, exterior color and roof color should be chosen in tandem. If you’re replacing the roof on an existing structure, choose one that complements the house color. While black and gray are extremely popular because they are neutral and go with anything, talk to your roofer about all your color options. Choosing a different color can give your home a pop of personality you never knew it had!
Environmental colors. Here in the Pacific Northwest we’ve got lots of green trees, gray mountains, and blue water. Grays, greens, and blues (or a combo of these coordinating colors) fit well with the natural environment. However, if the landscaping around your home incorporates other colors you may want to consider other colors as well. And don’t forget your backyard! If a lot of your roof is visible from the back of your home, take the color of other features into account (like a wraparound deck, brick patio, or cement terrace) when choosing a roof color.
Exterior accents. Is the exterior of your home one uniform color? A subtle patterned or multi-colored roof may add visual interest and curb appeal. Do you have a multicolored stone facade along the front? A strategic color choice can bring out some of the detail, while a uniform roof color may tone down the visual busy-ness.
Home style. Consider the style of your home; if it’s a historic style see what roof color was traditional for that style of home. While you don’t have to conform to tradition if you don’t want to, it can at least serve as a starting point for choosing a color.
HOA regulations. We have to say it: if you live in an HOA, make sure you are informed about their rules. Many have regulations about exterior colors. It would be awful to replace your roof only to find out after the fact that your color choice didn’t conform to the standards.
Request a sample. Once you’ve made your color choice, request a sample so you can see what it looks like in real life against your siding at different times of the day. Light changes from day to night, season to season, and also by physical location. The only way you can see what your roof will look like on your home is to have a sample in your hands.
